As of June 1, 2018, we have set up a bursary program for 76 students from 7 Vanni schools who are either poor, orphaned, hail from families headed by single women or widows, hail from divorced families or those who were deprived of an opportunity for a decent education. These students receive a monthly stipend ranging from SLRs 1,000 to SLRs 3,000 depending on their grades. The program kicks in for selected students in Grade 1 and continues all the way until they complete GCE (Advanced Level) or quit the school, whichever happens first.Mr. Gurukularajah, a former Minister of Education in the Northern Provincial Council is our current Program Administrator and he heads a panel of three civic society members who adjudicate all matters related to admission to the program, funds disbursement, and dismissal or termination from the fund. The annual cost of the project is $10,200 CAD.
This article that you see here was published in Killinochi in the newspaper Kalai Kathir. A few students were selected from the school Vatakachi Mahavithyalam to be given financial aid. Basically these students were chosen based on their high grades yet did not have the ability to afford higher education. These students were given monetary help, supplies, and bicycles to get to and from school. Special guest MP Sritharan sang praises about the Montreal based Vannivalam and mentioned that this was a great initiative. This project became a reality with the guidance of Theivantharam Uncle and members of Vannivalam.
