This mission was started to enable resumption of fishing in the Elephant Pass Lagoon. Before 2009 when the civil war was raging, the Sri Lankan Army had constructed several roadways and bunds in the Jaffna Lagoon thereby blocking the free movement of sea water. The lagoon dried up in several fishing villages. Sangaththaar Vayal is one such village where 130 families were deprived of their fisheries work and had no other income when the prawns that hatch in the shallow sea stopped coming there.
Vannivalam undertook to break one such bund extending to 300 meters. By September this year, we have completed 175 meters of work and there is already fresh sea water touching the shores of Sangathaar Vayal. The new waters will liven up the waters with plenty of newly hatched prawns and today, the people of Sangaththaar Vayal can hope for a new start. We will complete the balance 125 meters next year. The total cost of this project is Sl Rs 850,000 and we have already spent SlRs 400,000 out of this.
